ARCAS Wildlife Refuge & Mayan Ruins Tikal
August 11 - 17, 2019
Airline Vigilantes is excited to announce a trip to the ARCAS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in , Guatemala. The center focuses on the rehabilitation and reintroduction of all confiscated wild animals in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve and cares for 400-600 wild animals of 40+ species per year (parrots, macaws, spider and howler monkeys, owls, hawks, crocodiles, turtles, kinkajous, and many more.) This is a week long trip consisting of feeding, caring for, preparing diets, cleaning cages, and general maintenance. Speaking Spanish is not required, but it will help!
“At the Rescue Center in Peten, volunteers live in a two story wooden building situated in a beautiful tropical forest with comfortable wooden bunk beds, "western" showers and toilets and US-style 110 electricity. Volunteers eat and socialize at a separate kitchen/dining room area and there is a floating dock on the lake for late afternoon swims. There is internet service in Flores at internet cafes and restaurants. Volunteers at the Center help in the daily feeding and caring for the animals, which can include parrots, macaws, spider and howler monkeys, owls, hawks, crocodiles, turtles, kinkajous and many more. Nearly all of these animals have been seized from the illegal pet trade and are required to go through a rehabilitation process. It is important for their release for these animals not to become accustomed to people, therefore we treat them as wild as possible.
This trip also includes a two-day tour to the Mayan ruins of Tikal, including shuttle service there and back, one night in a hotel in the Park, two meals (lunch on arrival, and breakfast), and a bilingual guide for the park. The park entrance fee of $25/Q150 is not included.”
